If this is your first foray into laser hair removal services, you're probably wondering how it all works.
Don't worry; we've got you covered!

What is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is a medical procedure that uses a laser, or concentrated beam of light, to remove unwanted hair on your body. During our laser hair removal services, the light from the laser is absorbed by the melanin in your hair. That light is then converted to heat, which damages your hair follicles, preventing future hair growth. Most laser hair removal services are quick and can be completed in about 30 minutes. This treatment can be accomplished during a lunch break or quickly after work.

What Happens During Laser Hair Removal Treatment?

Southern Cosmetic Laser hair removal involves several steps. Once you schedule an appointment, you will need to shave prior to your treatment. You will need to avoid plucking, waxing, threading and depilatory creams at least three weeks prior to treatment. During your day of treatment, the following will occur:

  1. Clean the treatment area to kill germs and bacteria
  2. Provide you with protective goggles or glasses to wear.
  3. Commence laser hair removal treatment using our cutting-edge lasers.
  4. A topical cooling product such as aloe may be applied after the treatment.
  5. Send you on your way feeling smooth and satisfied.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

Services usually require an average of six to eight sessions with periodic touchups. However, sessions vary depending on your schedule and the area of your body that needs treatment. You may need more services on areas where hair grows quickly, like your upper lip. Some areas, like places on your back, will not require as many laser treatment sessions.

Skin Rejuvenation in Orangeburg, SC

We offer the most advanced skin rejuvenation services for all skin types for both men and women. We believe in these 3 Basic Principles of Aging!

  1. Skin Integrity
  2. Toxins
  3. Dermal Fillers

At Southern Cosmetic Laser we can't turn back the hands of time, but we've seen by applying these three steps in a systematic approach you can achieve long lasting, amazing more youthful results. You may even have people say to you, "Wow, you look amazing! What's your secret?"

Natural aging and a lifetime of involuntary facial muscle actions contribute to the formation of tiny wrinkles, creases and fine lines that can make you look angry, tired or older than you feel. Over time skin loses volume, collagen and elastin and can become thinner and begin to sag.

At Southern Cosmetic Laser, our skin rejuvenation services are some of the most popular laser skin services offered. Skin rejuvenation is a non-surgical treatment that helps you look as vibrant as you feel. Unlike traditional cosmetic surgeries, proper skin rejuvenation doesn't require you to put your skin or health at risk to achieve beautiful results. Instead, our skin rejuvenation options are safe and offer multiple benefits for people suffering from skin defects like scarring, acne and aging.

Skincare Injectables and Fillers
in Orangeburg, SC

Dermal fillers have changed the face of the medical cosmetic industry. About 10 million dermal services are applied every year. Fillers are used in shaping the face, lifting, volumizing and minimizing wrinkles. Fillers replace fat and bone less, lift and support. When combined with laser skin services and neurotoxins our patients can stick to an easy regimen that helps them maintain gorgeous, smooth skin.

How Do Dermal Fillers Work?

Many of our patients know they want anti-aging services like fillers to help smooth out wrinkles and help lift. However, they don't know how dermal fillers, or injectables, work.

As people age, they lose collagen, elastin, and perhaps more importantly, hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid helps retain moisture in your skin. Injectables that utilize hyaluronic acid and other substances help replace lost moisture, resulting in fuller, more radiant skin. Injectables and fillers can also help add extra volume to your lips and cheeks and firm up saggy skin.

Often, our patients see results after a single treatment, which can last as long as 9 to 18 months. Our patients choose Southern Cosmetic Laser because our fillers give a natural-looking result without affecting facial expressions, making for a discreet yet effective treatment.

Where Are Injectables Used?

We discuss and explain various types of fillers and decide which is best for you.

At Southern Cosmetic Laser, we offer personalized filler services for a number of problem areas, such as:

  1. Marionette Lines: These lines go directly down from the corners of your mouth and become more pronounced over time as your face loses volume.
  2. Cheeks: As you age, your cheeks lose volume, making you look gaunt and elderly. Our fillers plump up your cheeks, giving you a more youthful look without plastic surgery.
  3. Lips: Plumping up our patient's lips is one of our most popular injectable skincare services in Orangeburg. Our lip filler services are customized to each patient's preference, meaning we can help with subtle enhancements or obvious upgrades.
  4. Jaw and jawline areas.

The S.C. State University Real Estate Foundation is leasing Russell Street Suites Apartments at 1499 Russell St. from California-based Red Curb Investments to house about 89 students.

“Additional off-campus housing was required to accommodate the increase in freshmen/new student enrollment and the requirement for freshmen students to be housed on campus proper,” S.C. State Director of University Relations Sam Watson said.

“We have received nearly 15,000 applications for admission. We anticipate being able to accommodate an overall enrollment of around 3,000 students this fall,” he said.

Room-and-board rates will be similar to those for on-campus housing, Watson said.

The once-vacant building was given renewed life about 16 years ago.

Columbia attorney Robert Lewis purchased the 28,000-square-foot building in January 2007 with the intention of transforming it into university housing.

The $1.6 million renovation of the building began in June 2008 and included plaster repair and painting, as well as the installation of updated plumbing, electrical, security, air-conditioning, fire-suppression and sprinkler systems.

The building at one time also housed a bridal shop and a men’s clothing store.

The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The former Hotel Eutaw is no stranger to housing both S.C. State and Claflin students.

S.C. State used the building briefly for student housing in the early 1990s, and real estate agents tried for years to persuade the institution’s foundation to buy the property.

In 2009, about 50 Claflin students occupied the building during the 2009-10 academic year.

From 2009 to about 2015, Claflin housed as many as 85 students at one time in the building.

Claflin has not housed students in the building for several years, according to school officials.

The seven-story Hotel Eutaw was considered one of the most modern and best-equipped hotels in a community of Orangeburg’s size when it opened for business in 1927.

Two years later, the stock market collapsed, sending the nation into the Great Depression. By 1934, ownership of the hotel had transferred to a group of Orangeburg business people.

For decades, the hotel was renowned for its dining facilities and as a space for wedding receptions and other occasions.

But cars gradually replaced trains as the preferred mode of travel and U.S. Highway 301 diverted traffic from Russell Street to John C. Calhoun Drive. Newer motels grew up along the streamlined federal highway route, offering more parking and more first-floor guest rooms than the Hotel Eutaw could provide.

The T&D was published from the hotel’s lobby and dining room for nearly a month in late 1972 following a devastating fire at its physical plant.

In 1984, the hotel was renovated and renamed the Russell Street Inn. A bank foreclosed against the hotel’s then-owner in 1987. New owners took over the hotel in 1990, but it closed again in 1992.

In 1997, Regency Development Associates Inc. of Raleigh, N.C., stepped forward with a $1.3 million plan to divide the building into 32 apartments for senior citizens. City Council endorsed the project and provided $10,000. However, anticipated state grant money was not forthcoming.

Around 2005, the Claflin University Community Development Corp. also looked at purchasing the former hotel. The university did some engineering studies to see if it could be turned into low-income housing, but the project was not deemed feasible.

In addition to the Russell Street property, the S.C. State Real Estate Foundation is also leasing other off-campus buildings for student housing.

These include:

The university is also:

“President Alexander Conyers is developing strategies for additional housing,” Watson said.

OCSD plans for Senior Scholar banquet; seniors asked to check qualifications

Seniors are asked to engage with their school guidance counselors to assess their eligibility for the event, OCSD Director of Secondary Schools Dr. Veronica Scott said during December’s school board meeting.

It will be the second senior scholars banquet the district has held.

Scott said the district will promote the event on school websites, via emails sent to seniors, through parent portals, flyers and school counselors.

To qualify to attend the banquet, one must be a high school senior, be ranked in the top 10 percent of their graduating class and have a 3.5 grade point average in the spring of their junior year.

Seniors who are ranked in the top 10 percent of their class, but do not have a 3.5 GPA would not be eligible for the banquet.

Students would also have to have no grade lower than a C based on the academic standing at the end of their first semester of their senior year, Scott said.

Some trustees expressed concerns about the criteria, noting there are some students who have had a grade of less than a C in their freshman year, but then worked hard and ended up with a GPA greater than 3.5.

“Suppose you have a person who is a senior and when they were a freshman, they kind of faltered a little, but then they aced everything after that,” trustee Dr. William O'Quinn said. “They are penalized for what they did four years ago and they can't be a senior scholar when they meet all the other criteria?”

“I don't think that sends a very good message to a small subset of our students,” O'Quinn said.

O'Quinn said the qualifications could serve as a “stone wall” and a “disincentive” for students who may have faltered early in high school to improve.

Board Vice Chair Dr. Debora Brunson echoed O'Quinn's point, noting that a student could get a D and still end up with a GPA greater than 3.5.

Superintendent Dr. Shawn Foster said the district has aligned its senior scholar qualifications with state and national merit scholarship qualifications that would disqualify students who have received a D on their transcript.

“We didn't want to water down our academic scholars which may represent our academic programs,” Foster said. “It mirrors that opportunity there.”

Trustee Idella Carson asked if a student retook a course they got a D on and received an A, would that D be removed from the transcript.

Foster and Scott said grades are not removed from transcripts.

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (WIS) - As the Midlands begins to prepare for Hurricane Idalia, Orangeburg County officials are advising people living in the area to prepare for the worst.

The First Alert Weather team says Orangeburg County can see up to three to six inches of rain along with strong wind gusts of up to 65 miles per hour between Wednesday and Thursday.

Many roads in the City of Orangeburg and the county are known to flood. Orangeburg County Administrator Harold Young says that the county is putting the pieces together to be ready to go once the storm arrives.

“Orangeburg County is opening up our emergency services operations where we have our people in there staffed. We’re having calls with different groups like the school districts, the city and the county, utility providers, and things of that nature and we’re putting together to make sure that we can have things in place that we need to for the storms,” says Young.

Business Owner Rudy Bonaparte has been a local barber for 20 plus years at 2 da Bone Barbershop and is not looking to slow down once Hurricane Idalia makes impact.

“We’re gonna come in early for the hurricane but we’re not closing. Only how we’re closing is if the lights go off, cause we’re gonna cut hair in rain, sleet, or snow,” said Bonaparte.

Nearby universities such as Claflin University are also taking precautions against the storm by advising students to stay safe and be prepared.

" Here at Claflin University, we are continuously monitoring the storm, said Claflin’s Executive Director of Public Safety Melvin Williams. “We have been since Saturday. We’re participating in all of the emergency management meetings that are being held and we’re providing information to our campus community,” said Claflin University’s

Executive Director of Public Safety Melvin Williams.

Other universities such as South Carolina State University plans to dismiss classes at noon on Wednesday in preparation for the storm.

Harold Taylor also says that the town of Holly Hill is in the process of deploying sandbags for the preparation of the storm as well

People who live in the Town of Holly Hill area can pick up sandbags at the town’s wastewater treatment plant.

‘Leave your mark’: S.C. State alum, physician encourages graduates

Dr. Antoinette Williams Rutherford, a pulmonary physician, has been defined by the positive impact she has made on others’ lives.“As you venture on in life, at different points in your life, you will have this definition of success change. Dr. Antoinette Williams Rutherford, a pulmonary physician, has been defined by the positive impact she has made on others’ lives.

“As you venture on in life, at different points in your life, you will have this definition of success change. Success is equally about the impact you make, the lives that you touch and the difference that you make in this world,” Rutherford said.

Rutherford served as the featured speaker at S.C. State's fall commencement exercises held in the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center on Friday. She’s medical director of adult sleep medicine at Prisma Health Midlands, as well as interim division chief of pulmonary critical care and sleep medicine at Prisma Health.

The 1993 graduate of Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School graduated with honors from S.C. State in 1997. She was the first S.C. State student to graduate from the University of South Carolina's School of Medicine.

She said being accepted into medical school had been a pinnacle of success for her, but her understanding of true success eventually changed.

“As life evolved, my perception of success has shifted. It wasn't solely about personal achievement and accomplishments, but evolved from personal milestones to the impact that I could make. True success is not measured solely by personal achievements, but, again, by the lives you touch and the communities you serve,” she said.

Rutherford continued, “Today, my success is about helping others achieve their aspirations. It is about dedicating myself to the people of South Carolina, improving their health care and ensuring a better tomorrow for others.”

Rutherford said true success will not necessarily come overnight, but will be more of a journey.

“In this digital era of Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, where the lure of success is dazzled in our eyes and where sometimes success could be done quickly, that is not always the case. ... Just like a flower, it takes time to grow,” she said.

“Graduating today is one success, but there are definitely more to come. Remember to define your success, but do not forget that success is fluid. It evolves. It adapts and morphs into something more profound. ... Keep defining your success and expect that once you've achieved one success, you will have others,” she said.

“I want you to remember to celebrate the small victories because these small victories will lead to larger triumphs,” Rutherford said.

She said the graduates that “Bulldog tenacity” can take them anywhere and urged them to leave their own indelible mark on the world.

“I'm known to get the job done. Leave your mark. Make yourself known in your own way. ... Success often favors those who persist in the face of adversity,” Rutherford said.

She also urged the graduates to set goals, take advantage of opportunities and stand ready to adapt to technological and other changes the world will be bring.

“Remain open to pivoting. ... Keep an open mind and seize opportunities as they appear,” she said.

Rutherford said she stayed in Hodge Hall on the S.C. State campus, where she poured herself into the pursuit of learning. It’s a process that never ends.

The physician said she had her own personal chant: “If can do it, yes I can. If I can't do it, no one can.” She said it helped her develop her authenticity and life's purpose.

“Your uniqueness is your strength,” Rutherford said, admonishing the graduates to embrace failure and use it as stepping stone to greater things.

“I know that you can do it. The world awaits your Bulldog tenacity and brilliance,” she said.

S.C. State President Alexander Conyers told the graduates that they’re ready for the challenges ahead.

“The world awaits you with many complex challenges, but I'm confident that you're more than ready to rise to the occasion. In fact, you were built for these challenges,” Conyers said.
