Laser hair removal is a procedure that is performed by directing a concentrated laser beam at hair follicles. The laser works by converting light energy to heat, which inhibits the hair follicles’ ability to grow hair or delays future hair growth.

For the vast majority of our patients, laser hair removal becomes a true game changer in terms of saving time and money over waxing, sugaring, electrolysis, etc.

Our Laser Hair Removal Center in Charleston offers a range of custom laser hair treatments that are created specifically for you.

Motus Laser Hair Removal

Motus is the only clinically proven method of laser hair removal that is completely painless with a proven safety record. Its variety of wavelengths (755, 810 and 1064) and cutting-edge technologies allow us to treat a wide range of patients and skin types — and customize a laser hair removal plan to achieve our patients’ specific goals.

The system works by gradually heating the skin to the temperature required to treat the hair follicle in order to prevent regrowth. The hair follicle is treated by targeting the pigmentation (melanin), which absorbs the light of the laser.

Suitable for all skin types, skin tones, and body parts, the Motus AY and AZ laser systems are as effective on lighter hair as darker hair and even works on tanned skin.

What to Expect

First, your provider will apply a soothing gel to the treatment area. Repeated, gentle sweeping motions with the applicator gradually heat the treatment area with a high frequency of short pulses. The laser applicator is large enough to make treatment relatively swift.

Motus AY technology cools the surface of the skin to increase patient comfort, prevent superficial burns and allow for virtually painless, yet highly effective hair removal. Treatment time varies, with some areas completed in just two minutes.

There is no downtime after treatment and you can resume your normal activities when you leave your appointment. We do ask that you refrain from unprotected sun exposure for 48 hours.

Laser Hair Removal Treatment Guidelines

Pre-Treatment Instructions:

-You may not be treated within 3 months of being on Accutane.

-Please ensure your treatment area is completely clean-shaven 12-24 hours prior to your appt. If you arrive with hair, we may have to reschedule your appt.

-Avoid sun for 48-72 hours prior to and after your appointment and apply sunscreen daily to the treated area. We can treat tanned skin with our device but will not treat over a sunburn. Ideally, we prefer to treat your skin when it is as close as possible to its natural color so that we can ensure you get as much energy as your skin type can handle.

-Avoid self-tanner for 5 days prior to appointment.

-Call to reschedule if you have taken photosensitizing drugs within the last week.

-Refrain from waxing, tweezing, and chemical depilatories for 4-6 weeks prior to treatment and while undergoing your treatment series. You can ONLY shave during this time period.

-Call to reschedule if you are or become pregnant. You may be treated when you are breastfeeding.

-If you are prone to cold sores, please treat preventatively prior to treatment. Should you have questions on what this entails, please contact our office.

Results of our Laser Hair Removal Services

Laser hair removal is a process that takes more than one visit in order to capture and treat the hair at its most receptive phase of the growing cycle. The number of treatment sessions will differ from person to person, but the average is six to eight sessions.

Laser hair removal treatments are performed on areas from the neck down every six to eight weeks. 90% of patients experience a 90% clearance rate after initial treatment, with the patient having a touch-up every year or two. Treatments are performed on areas from the neck up every four weeks. Since everyone’s hair growth rate is different, the treatment schedule may shift to match the patient’s individual needs.

Disclaimer: Every patient is different, and results may vary due to a number of factors. During your consultation, we will discuss your results with you and create a completely customized treatment plan.

Laser Hair Removal: FAQs

Is there a difference in treating dark and light hair?

Yes, but because the Motus offers multiple laser wavelengths (755, 810, and 1064), we are able to quickly and painlessly treat the widest range of hair types and color all year round, even on tanned skin. This breakthrough technology lets us customize the treatment for each person. During your sessions, we may be working with different wavelengths depending on the various treatment areas. The only caveat is that the hair must be darker than the surrounding skin. Very light peach fuzz on the face, for example, is not treatable.

Can you guarantee 100% hair removal?

We cannot guarantee 100% hair removal because the laser is only effective when the hair is in the anagen growth phase. Hair can remain dormant for years at a time. We tell our patients to expect 90% hair removal assuming they adhere to their recommended treatment sessions and schedule. The treatment schedule is extremely important to outcomes.

How much is laser hair removal?

We price our treatments based on the size of the treatment area ranging from extra small to extra-large. Example price estimates for each common treatment area are as follows:

Extra small $85 (lip/chin)

Small $185 (underarms/bikini)

Medium $285 (Brazilian)

Large $400 (Half Leg/Arms)Extra Large $475 (Full Legs/Male Back/Male Chest)

Sessions are sold in a package of six to eight for optimal results. The sessions are spaced out based on average hair regrowth cycles and will vary by person. We generally suggest 4-6 week intervals for areas such as the underarms, whereas legs may require 8-12 week intervals. Patients are permitted to pay for a series or pay as they go. When paying up front for a series, there is a 10% discount applied. For patients purchasing multiple areas at the same time (e.g. bikini, underarms, lower legs), we allow for a 20% discount overall when paid in full. Care Credit may also be used. If you have a specific treatment area in mind that is not classified above, just speak to your provider about sizing.

The cost of laser hair removal may appear a bit steep at first glance, but it’s important to remember that treatment is required far less than other methods. Most patients who see us for hair removal are those who are typically waxing, sugaring, or using some type of chemical depilatories. When you factor in the volume of treatments patients must continually do with those hair removal methods and the fact that they must do them from now on, it can easily justify the expense. Most of our patients describe this treatment as completely game-changing.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

No. Old school traditional laser hair removal (namely when performed with an intense pulsed light device) had the potential to hurt pretty significantly depending on the treatment area. Many patients report having cried at their IPL appt or needing pain medication to get through their treatment. Those days are over, thankfully. We have the latest and greatest technology called the Motus from Cartessa Aesthetics. We have both the Motus AY and Motus AZ. In-motion technology is different from traditional stamping methods where the heat was delivered in one large burst. It was often likened to a rubber band snapping very hard. When performed in sensitive areas, it could be quite painful. In-motion means that the device warms up evenly like a crockpot with the heat dispersed to avoid discomfort. The addition of a chill tip makes the Motus technology completely painless.

How long does laser hair removal last?

The results of laser hair removal are permanent. However, it’s important to note that the device technically provides laser hair reduction. While marketing can be misleading, it is impossible to discern which phase of growth your hair is in at any given time and laser treatments are only effective on hair that is in the anagen growth phase. The reason it is called reduction is that we have no way of knowing how many of your individual hairs may be dormant at any given time and/or how long they may stay dormant. For that reason, there is no way to guarantee 100% clearance that lasts forever. In addition, there are a variety of other factors that can spur hair growth in patients such as pregnancy, hormonal fluctuations, etc.

Is laser hair removal safe?

Yes, laser hair removal performed in a reputable facility such as Koniver Aesthetics by providers who are trained and certified, using cutting edge equipment that is properly maintained is very safe. One reason we chose the Motus is that it has the ability to painlessly treat all six skin types. We do advise patients not to come in for their appointment with a raging sunburn and to avoid the sun for about 48 hours post treatment. Beyond that, the treatment is well tolerated with few to no side effects.
