NORTH CHARLESTON — Stand-up comedy in Charleston will have a new home not far from Park Circle after The Sparrow closes later this year.

Comedian Josh Bates announced a new venture with entrepreneur Rick Blind that will bring a combination bar and theater to 3324 Rivers Ave. The new space, set to open in in February, will include about 5,000 square feet of space divided between the bar, a 90-seat theater, a green room that doubles as a podcasting studio and a forthcoming VIP area.

The new comedy club that will step in for The Sparrow as the gym for Charleston stand-up comics sits across the street from the Starlight Motor Inn and next door to Jackrabbit Filly ownership’s new restaurant, King BBQ. The Sparrow became a hub for comics plying their craft in part due to its long-running weekly open mic nights.

Having a theater space means Wit’s End will be able to host other forms of entertainment as well. Future plans include bringing community theater events to the space, in addition to hosting sketch and improv comedy events. Bates said he and his partner might even work with King BBQ on events.

Comedy at The Sparrow became a spin-off brand that’s brought in rising stars in the stand-up world to Park Circle after the bar’s owner, Cami Kind, tapped Bates to evolve entertainment offerings in 2019.

In July, Kind announced the bar would close after more than a decade because of a lease dispute. She said that she would not reopen The Sparrow elsewhere.

The upcoming closing left Bates needing to find a new path forward for Comedy at The Sparrow, whose open mics became so popular that they switched from walk-in signups to advance registration on Mondays.

The last day of comedy at The Sparrow is Dec. 9. Bates said he plans on a smooth transition for comedy fans when Wit’s End opens in February. He has booked national comics to play in the club’s opening weeks, along with a concert series.

Bates said more information on the club will be shared in the coming months.

NORTH CHARLESTON — High Water Festival has announced its 2024 dates and lineup.

The celebration of music, food and libations curated by Shovels & Rope is back for its sixth year on April 20-21.

This year’s headliners at the North Charleston Riverfront Park event include Noah Kahan and Hozier.

They will be joined by Fleet Foxes, The Flaming Lips performing “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots,” Shovels & Rope, Grace Potter, Courtney Barnett, The Wallflowers, The Walkmen, Briston Maroney, Houndmouth, The Linda Lindas, The Dip, Kevin Morby, Leyla McCalla, The Heavy Heavy, Olivia Jean, Cut Worms, Al Olender and Charleston’s very own indie pop outfit Babe Club.

In addition to two days of live music, there will be food from local and regional eateries, craft brews and co*cktails and local craft vendors selling everything from handmade jewelry to leather goods.

The Charleston Southern Buccaneers (3-8, 0-0 Big South) face the Presbyterian Blue Hose (7-6, 0-0 Big South) in a matchup of Big South squads at 7:00 PM ET on Wednesday. The game will be available on ESPN+.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — Verde, the local restaurant that serves salads and more, announced that they are opening three locations in the Charleston area in the near future.

“This winter we’re painting the town green!," said Jennifer Ferrebee, co-founder and co-owner of Verde. "In a small matter of time we will be adding a variety of three new ways and locations to grab your greens. From a new address on King Street to an outlet in the College of Charleston to Park Circle. We couldn’t be more excited to expand our footprint in the Charleston community we are lucky to get to call home”

You can find Verde’s new home on King Street at 433 King Street, just a few blocks north of their previous location. Like their other restaurants, this one will feature made-to-order Verde favorites as well as a large selection of rotating, freshly made grab-and-go options. Some new offerings will include iced coffee, matcha, and some breakfast items.

“We’ve long been in talks with the College of Charleston about a space on campus and their new concept The Market at Liberty Dining Hall was the perfect spot," Ferrebee said. "The College has truly been a massive piece of the Verde story since the day we opened in 2011 and being able to serve the students right on campus seems like a great way to honor that 12 year relationship.”

This location will be similar to the Verde On The Go location in MUSC’s Main Cafeteria where you can order made-to-order salads and wraps as well as pick up grab-and-go options outside of operating hours.

Verde has also opened a production kitchen space at 4731 Mixson Avenue. In addition to being a production and office space, Verde will be able to serve the Park Circle community with a retail location featuring made-to-order salads and wraps, as well as an array of grab-and-go options. This location will also serve as the new Verde Headquarters.

The North Charleston City Council recently approved contract agreements for the 50-acre riverfront development known as Battery Park.

A partnership consisting of Jamestown, Weaver Capital Partners, and WECCO Development will assist the city in transforming the former Charleston Naval Complex into a vibrant, mixed-use district and regional destination, according to a news release.

The development, which is aligned to the City’s “Battery Park Master Plan,” will include over 1,400 residential units and a mix of commercial uses that support local and regional economic growth, the release stated. It is designed to improve quality of life of area residents, foster more equitable and sustainable economic development, advance community health and wellness, encourage social cohesion, and build community.

The development plans for Battery Park will establish a series of residential, retail, office, entertainment spaces, and parks along the waterfront and include the construction of a new pavilion with a market hall, event space, and an active green fronting the water, the release stated. Within the 50-acre site, approximately 23 acres will become public spaces, parks, and streets.

“Battery Park is an investment in — and commitment to — the future of North Charleston,” said Jay Weaver, founder and president of Weaver Capital Partners, in the release. “The project will be a catalyst for community, providing access to the waterfront and greenspaces while creating opportunities for area residents, businesses, artists, and restaurants. This is a vision many years in the making, and we are honored to partner with the city to bring it to life.”

As part of the agreement, the development team will target 15 percent Minority and Women Owned Business Enterprises contractor participation during the construction phase, establish a local apprenticeship program, and reserve 17 percent of the residential units as workforce housing for people earning less than 120% of the area’s median income.

“Our promise to the people of North Charleston is simple: Battery Park will embrace the rich culture and history of the city while creating a Central Business District that will be a focal point of new possibilities,” said Lucile Cogswell, president of WECCO Development, in the release. “Battery Park will be a defining destination offering experiences rooted in and inspired by the best that the Lowcountry has to offer.”

The vision was outlined in the City of North Charleston’s “Battery Park Master Plan,” a culmination of decades of planning and community engagement, the release stated. The City issued a Request for Qualifications for a master developer for the site in January 2023. In total, seven development teams responded to the request and the city selected the partnership of Jamestown, Weaver Capital Partners, and WECCO Development in May as the most qualified, experienced, and capable to fulfill the City’s vision. The development agreement was finalized by way of the City Council vote on Dec. 14, 2023.

The development team selected for Battery Park is also developing a nearby site known as Navy Yard Charleston, which is projected to encompass approximately 3.5 million square feet of commercial and residential space and over 2,600 residential units across 85 acres, also part of the former naval base, the release stated. The project includes the adaptive reuse of the historic brick “storehouse row” buildings, the base’s former power plant, and the Naval Hospital.

Roper St. Francis Healthcare will build a new campus in North Charleston that will include a new hospital and office building.

The $1 billion Roper Hospital Medical Campus in North Charleston will occupy 27-acres near interstates 26 and 526 and be easily accessible for patients living in Berkeley, Charleston or Dorchester counties, according to a Roper release.

The project will be one of the largest, most advanced health care construction projects on the East Coast and will meet the health care needs of one of the fastest growing areas in the country.

“This new medical campus will be a paradigm for providing healthcare, whether that’s complex surgeries in a hospital or an annual checkup in an outpatient office,” said Dr. Jeffrey DiLisi, president and chief executive officer of Roper St. Francis Healthcare, said in the release. “We made the bold decision one year ago to move Roper Hospital, and I’m grateful to our North Charleston partners for breathing life into this dream. This new campus will ensure our ability to continue delivering the quality care that’s been the hallmark of our brand for generations.”

The new Roper Hospital Medical Campus is expected to include a full-service acute care hospital with a 24-hour Emergency Room, the release stated. The campus also will have a Medical Office Building where a vast array of outpatient and specialty care will be provided. Roper St. Francis Healthcare has secured six premium real estate parcels off Mall Drive near North Charleston City Hall to build the campus.

In November 2021, DiLisi announced a roadmap for the next decade for the Lowcountry’s largest health care system for adults that centered on caring for more patients, expanding services and modernizing technology to better serve future generations, the release stated. One of the five key initiatives of that Roper St. Francis Healthcare 2030 plan was optimizing the health care system’s footprint in the Lowcountry, which also includes expanding Roper St. Francis Berkeley Hospital and providing additional health care services in highly populated and growing communities.

This new campus will be the fourth location for Roper Hospital since it opened downtown in 1856 and will be technologically and structurally upgraded to better withstand natural disasters, such as floods, hurricanes and earthquake, the release stated.

While construction may take up to five years, Roper St. Francis Healthcare will continue to offer services on the Charleston peninsula to remain convenient to those in need downtown, according to the release.

Roper St. Francis Healthcare has long maintained a strong presence in North Charleston, operating the Roper Hospital Diagnostics & ER – Northwoods, along with two Express Care locations and the Greer Transitions Clinic.

Roper St. Francis Healthcare hired E4H Environments for Health Architecture and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) to design the new medical campus, the release stated. The partnership combines global design excellence with comprehensive health care planning and design expertise. These teams provide a combination of local knowledge and national thought leadership, which has facilitated innovations and transformations for clients such as New York-Presbyterian Hospital, The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Cleveland Clinic, and Egypt's New National Cancer Institute in Giza, one of the largest facilities of its kind in the world.
